Our Company History
It was started in the late 1950s by Don Philpott and his wife Pam. Don, always a keen shooter and countryman, originally arrived in Derbyshire after the war to learn Dairy farming. Shortly after deciding that was not for him he set up an agricultural contractors business but after a serious accident meant he was no longer able to continue, he then began a new career selling tools and ex army goods in a shop in Normanton Road, Derby. Don was never the ‘stay in shop’ sort of man and soon left Pam to manage the shop and started doing cattle markets throughout the Midlands often with their baby daughter Jane accompanying him in the lorry whilst Pam worked full time the shop. He later expanded into wire and fencing stakes and then into work wear selling wellies, boots, wax coats etc. In 1974 Don met Andrew Cuthbert whilst on a helicopter ride at the CLA Game Fair, Andrew also a Norfolk man, told him of a Country Fair he was organising in Holkham and in 1975 Don Philpott and his daughter Jane attended their first Fair with a trade stand selling country clothing with the traditional Hunter Wellington at £7 a pair! In the early 1980s with the tool shop in Derby, clothing shop in Borrowash and regular pitches at 4 cattle markets Sarge and Jane became engaged. Don took his well earned retirement and signed over the business. They all realised the small family business would soon have 2 households to support so another lorry was purchased and Don Philpott and Daughter became a regular sight at several shows throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. Unfortunately Don died in 1988 after a long illness so with the tool shop closed Pam continued to run the Borrowash clothing shop. Sarge and Jane moved to Dumfries & Galloway and continued to do shows and opened shops in Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas each eventually needing larger name boards to including Grand Daughters! Now in 2007 the small family business continues with the granddaughters at 14yrs and 11yrs helping in holidays. The shops are closed, Pam is full time ‘Nan’ and Sarge and Jane continue to do shows, mail order and organise the Galloway Country Fair in August at Raehills near Moffat. |
